Life Planning VI
That means it's time for New Year's Resolutions -
right? Well, yes ... or no! ‘Yes’, if you want the usual
disappointment in a few weeks, when you realize that those good
intentions were for naught. ‘No’, if you have a better plan ... a
Life Plan. If you've been with me on our journey over the past few
weeks, then you should have the following:
1. An assessment of where you are in life
today. You've taken stock, honestly and thoroughly, of your
past and your present.
2. Clarity on what’s important to you. You've defined a series
of
Life Accounts
for this season of your life, with a clear Vision for each. The sum
total of these is a picture of what your life should look like when you
are living it on purpose.
3. A purpose statement for each Life Account.
You've clearly defined why each is important to you.
4. A plan for investment in each Life Account.
You've
planned what will you do daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly or annually
to increase your net worth in each Account.
Now, isn't that better than
a set of nebulous New Year's Resolutions?! We've done something that
has the power to go beyond the head and reach the heart - the secret to
changing our habits and our behavior. Remember: "if you keep on doing
what you've always done, you'll keep on getting what you've always
got."
As I stated in my first Life
Planning email: those who do quality Life
Planning live more purposeful, fulfilled lives, because they
make better life decisions, having discovered what is truly important
to them. They live with passion, free from regret or guilt, and have
greatly expanded positive influence on the lives of others.
"Developing a Life Plan is nothing short of getting a bucket and
lowering it deep into the well of your heart and pulling out its
life-giving water." (‘Becoming a Coaching Leader’ p.64)
So we've done some great
work on Life Planning. But wait ... we're not finished. The next step
is:
5. Set appointments
with yourself to follow through with the strategies you
developed for each
Life Account.
Let's say (like me) one of your Accounts is Health/Fitness; set
appointments with yourself to go to the gym, or go out for a walk, a
hike, a bike ride ... whatever your strategy says. At this time of
year, every other day I need to run, hike, snowshoe, ski or ride my
Spinner. You and I need to schedule these appointments as if they were
'big deals' ... because they are! Setting these appointments makes the
Life Account and its strategies a priority in our lives.
Put all your
Life Account
activities on your calendar as commitments. Remember they are your life
priorities! If for any reason you can’t enter these activities into
your planner, spend more time on this step. You need to be able
schedule and track your progress and success, and be accountable for
failure. The activities must be quantifiable and measurable; they are
when they are on your calendar or in your planner.
Use your Life Plan to schedule your week. So, if coaching
your son’s soccer team is a Life priority right now, then put on your
calendar “Tuesday and Thursday at
5pm soccer practice”. Now
make sure everyone who needs to know (your spouse and family members,
and your work colleagues) knows this is a priority. Make your
commitment public – that’s powerful.
When January 1st arrives, I hope you will be in a position
to start committing priority Life Plan activities to your calendar.
It’s going to make all the difference in the world to living your life
with passion – the life you were meant to live.
It will also enable you to commit to your schedule the
effort that your Juice Plus+ Virtual Franchise needs. Juice Plus+ will
be one of your
Life Accounts
if your Life Planning has confirmed 'WHY' it is important to you
- you probably had an 'A-hah' moment during the process. You may have
connected your Juice Plus+ business to one or more of your other Life
Accounts, seeing clearly how it will support your priorities elsewhere
in your life. This is a good example of the power of Life Planning -
PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF THIS HAPPENED TO YOU!
IF Juice Plus+ is NOT one of your
Life Accounts,
that’s ok, because your Life Planning has shown you that other things
truly are more important. Knowing that sets you up to live free of
guilt and regret – you can stop beating yourself up - and to focus on
those Life Accounts that will give you the best return on your
investment of time and money.
Next time we'll design your 'perfect week',
and learn how to maximize your Life Plan.
